Best way to spend your down days?
Nestled into a comfy corner with an incredible book that I can’t put down. Or sharing in a meaningful conversation with a friend over delicious food.
What was your first job?
Dishwasher. The summer before my freshman year in high school I was on the Gilboa Summer Ski Camp work crew at Mt. Hood. I was on Upper Kitchen duty, which basically means I helped prepare meals a little and cleaned pots and pans a lot. The Chef, Jimmy, readily bestowed wisdom, stories, and opinions - he was a true character and genius in the kitchen. The 4:00am wakeup call was pretty brutal, but we got used to it and in exchange for our work, we got to ski and run gates during the summer.
Current favorite piece of gear? Why?
I am a huge fan of the Helly Hansen Kvitegga Shell Bib Pant. Not only is it extremely Waterproof, Windproof and Seam Sealed, but Helly thought of so many great details, my favorite being the body zip down one side allowing me to access the great outdoors when nature calls :-) without having to take off my jacket when I’m in a hurry or if it’s freezing out. Another item I wear constantly on and off the mountain is the HH Lifa Merino Seamless Baselayer. It is hands down the most comfortable item of clothing I own, two words- cozy and effective. And my Volkl 90Eights allow me to be agile and powerful whether I am cruising through powder, crud, or anything in between. The tip and tail rocker provides clearance to boldly rip down anything, and the construction is stable enough that I can confidently cruise and carve at top speeds.
What is your number one goal in skiing/riding right now?
To share my love for it. To inspire others to get outside. There definitely are still lines I’d like to conquer, mountains I would love to explore, and testing my boundaries is something I strive for, but as far as goals, it is more about encouraging others than it is about proving anything to myself. Which is a pretty incredible place to be.
Best advice you were ever given?
Celebrate other’s success and find joy in their victories. This was a wonderful piece of advice that my dear friend, climber, and physician, Geoff Tabin, shared with me. So simple, yet can virtually change every interaction.
Where do you draw your inspiration from?
Wow. So many places. People I meet, articles I read. Moments I’ve shared. It totally depends. I read an amazing page of prose and it inspires me to be more creative. I meet someone that is making a difference in the world and I want to be a better contributor. I watch a friend ski an incredible line and it excites me to stretch myself as an athlete. I am constantly inspired.
What is your greatest fear?
That the practice of empathy and compromise becomes a thing of the past - especially when it comes to taking care of each other and the planet.
Best moment filming with WME this year?
Getting stuck during a squall in a hole with skiers Marcus Caston, Kevin Giffin, Linda Haaland, and guides Oscar Oppenheim and Andreas Holm… We had hiked for about three hours to get to a ridge for a ski shot with a sprawling fjord in the background when what we thought was just a little microburst swept in. The weather had been coming and going so suddenly that we decided just to wait it out. The six of us dug a pit and then, due to the increasing cold, added walls creating sort of a deconstructed igloo. We hunkered down, shared food and continually scanned the skies for any hint of blue. For almost four hours we stuck it out before finally calling it quits and cautiously making our way off the mountain. It could have been a miserable experience, but due to the wonderful cast of characters I laughed constantly, was taken care of generously, and reminded that the worst of times can bring out the best in people, and I happened to be with a phenomenal group of people.
