It’s been a long wait. But get ready for Wild Issue #175; it’s one of our biggest and best issues ever. Unfortunately, however, it’s an issue tinged with tragedy, as Wild looks squarely at the fires that have devastated Australia over this last summer.

There’s a 5000-word feature on why these fires change everything; another piece on Craig Pearce’s evacuation from Kosciuszko NP as flames approached; an opinion piece on why this conflagration has made Victoria’s Great Forests National Park more important than ever; and a Q+A with botanist Robert Kooyman, who details how the recently-discovered and highly-endangered Nightcap oak fared in the fires. But beyond the bushfires, there are some cracking adventure pieces too.

There are stories on bushwalking in the Pilbara, paddling on Alaska’s Tatshenshini River, tramping in NZ’s Arrowsmith Range, and a stunning photo essay on climbing Ama Dablam (arguably the world’s most beautiful mountain). There are also track notes for one of Australia’s best alpine traverses, a guide to canyoning in Wanaka, and a how-to for adventuring in India’s Ladakh region.

And then there’s the next in our series on Australia’s Great Environmental Battles; this time (in another 5000+ word piece) it looks at Australia’s longest-running campaign, the Battle for the Southeast Forests. It’s also the type of story you’ll find in no other publication.
